Harvest time!

Well we have harvested our very first crop at Uprooted Farms!

It was a busy summer and it was hot and dry in Southern Alberta. Living 2 hours from the farm land made it difficult to keep the watering in check, along with trips and other work obligations and unfortunately it did affect our harvest. But the one great thing was... We still harvested!

Our carrot harvest was the most lucrative, surprisingly, with more carrots than what we knew what to do with, followed by our beets, which were beyond delicious, as determined by our dinner parties where our bias was confirmed by our guests!

It felt great to see the vegetables of our labour at harvest time and it helped us see where we can improve and build for the next season.

This was mostly a test season to see what could be done, how our soil was and to test our will and determination. It showed promise and helped direct our efforts into 2018 which will be bigger and better, with potentially more summer hours to devote to the farm. One step at a time!

By keeping a close eye on other farms and markets in Alberta this summer, we have been able to develop a plan for future seasons and ways in which we can stand out and be successful. This starter season helped drive us further for a goal to be full time farmers in the near future! One investment at a time! One of the best motivators was seeing all the successful farmers and their lifestyles they document on their social media. The hard work and passion shown by these individuals kept us yearning for a life like that. We thank our role models like Steel Pony Farms and Hearts & Roots for giving us such great examples.

The want is there, the need is there, for more local food and sources to contribute to communities. Because this cause is becoming so relevant, it is helping us with our drive to build, to feed others and improve our nutrition and environment.

I know, I'm feeling pretty heroic.

Now the next challenge this fall becomes the learning of Homesteading and lost arts such as pickling! With bountiful harvests comes creative ways to save food!

We hope your autumm is filled with warmth, campfires, good squash and pumpkin pie...ale. Definitely ale.

Until next time, my friends!

K
