It All Started With a Text

"I hate my job. Let's grow beets together." - The text that started it all.

I was tired of the hamster wheel. It wasn't satisfying. What was my purpose? I kept asking myself what motivation I had, and sadly all it was at the end of the day was a pay cheque.

I started dreading Mondays, then Tuesdays, and even Wednesdays. Then finally I even dreaded Sundays knowing I was going back to the hamster wheel that I labeled my life. Traffic jams, emails sent for no one to read. Meetings listening to people talk about things I didn't care about. I was tired of it all, tired of living life without a purpose, without motivation to do more, and making a difference for the better.

It was decided the cookie cutter life was not made for this couple. That our main goal in life was not to own a beige house with a two door garage to fit the cars that have to drive us to work every day. This wasn't the ultimate plan. We decided together that we just didn't have the patience to live a life that held no purpose.

What was our purpose then? What kept us up at night, what kept us researching through the day?... oh yes, it was food.

We love food. More importantly we love good food. We love good food so much that we are willing to dig, pull, sweat and shovel our way to it. So it was decided. We would grow good food, because what is better than good food? Good local food.

A sporadic, rather ridiculous sounding text in mid February 2017 started what would become Uprooted, a farm paying homage to the weird, heirloom and just over all quirky and delicious vegetables that you can't find at those plain old superstores. It started as a day dream, but landed on the laps of two very optimistic, adventurous and persistent individuals.

In this farmer's blog, we want to be able to document and record our challenges and triumphs that go along with our dream of Uprooted Farms. Our goal is to be a niche producer of weird veg to central and southern Alberta, from farmer's markets to restaurants, willing to jump the bandwagon onto fantastic local produce. We want to promote local eats and producers and we hope you'll join us in this adventure to make a culinary difference for the better.

Stay tuned for more blog posts as we start our first season (albeit part time) breaking into the scene, testing, experimenting, failing, succeeding, and discovering a new purpose in life. #eatlocal #marketgardening

Until next time my friends,

Kait & (her much bigger half) Ben
